Ethical Growth

Max Caruana Donates $25,000 to The Headwaters at the Comal

While the population growth and new builds in the Hill Country of Texas continues to rise, open spaces are decreasing. Growing ethically with consideration on how this growth impacts our local environment needs to be a priority to preserve the quality of life, air and water around us. While we all have an ability to make positive changes in our local environment, the development community also has the opportunity to play a huge role in ethical growth by utilizing smart development practices.

Max Caruana, GBMC Holdings is paving the way for ethical growth in New Braunfels. Taking care to incorporate smart development techniques in his work at Yaupon Lofts the team is planting native species, sourced locally, to support our local birds, pollinators and wildlife, and installing low water usage drip irrigation and mulch to minimize landscape water use. In making that commitment Max and his team are helping people to move here but doing it in a thoughtful manner which speaks to the mission of the Headwaters. In addition to smart development practices, he made a generous donation of $25,000 to The Headwaters at the Comal

The Headwaters at the Comal is a non-profit created by the community of New Braunfels in 2012. It’s mission is to strengthen the relationship between the community and nature. The property includes a warehouse, classrooms and trails along with 16 acres that is still the original water drilling site for the city. The Headwaters have now started to restore the property into four different ecotones: Xeriscape, Woodlands, Riparian and Savanna Prairie. Each ecotone will feature nature trails, picnic areas, along with beautiful gardens for families and field trip visits. This is done by showcasing the significance of the Comal Springs in the following way:

Educate & Demonstrate: inspire a lifelong practice of enjoying, protecting and stewarding cultural and ecological resources.

Protect & Conserve: ensure protection of the Comal Springs, the most significant springs in the American Southwest, and the endangered species it supports

Partner in Research: identify and demonstrate solutions to real world problems, allow for discovery of this “new” site.

Create Community: Create a premier education center inspiring hearts and minds on the importance of conservation to community.
